K&D took on the best in the Midlands on Saturday. Our ladies were represented in the first Senior race. Jess Woolley underlined her continued progress by taking down sub-20 parkrunner and distance duchess Mary Heald. The two battled hard and Jess finished 55th in the Midlands, a superb result. She was followed home by Mary in 74th and Katie Price who’s continued to use XC as a brilliant training tool in 231st.
For the K&D Men it was all eyes on the final league race but the headlines were stolen by David Carbutt who continued to be the surprise package of winter. Big Dave, always a good runner is currently crushing the cross. First man for K&D he took down seasoned competitor and Team Captain Torsten Roesler. Dave finished 117th, while Torsten crossed the line in 127th. In his first Midlands Gary Polhill finished an excellent 136th, Richard Dixon Dobby Shuffled round to 142nd, Greg Turner continued his XC season with a superb 168th. Darren John had his most solid race in his Blood Clot return to health with 221st, ahead of XC enthusiasts Pete Austin and Max Gimson, who just love the hills in 233rd and 236th.
Leamington Civic Golf Club appears to have closed down, which is very sad. Though it did mean an expanded Leamington course that was superb. With Leamington and Gaydon the Midlands has two superb new courses.
Congrats to Helix Sports’ Doug Musson who finished 4th in the Senior Men’s Champs and Louie Boot (Son of K&D’er Sandra Boot) who finished 6th in the U20 men against top class competition.
“Big wheel keep on turning Proud Mary keep on burning And we’re rolling, rolling Rolling on the river…”
We are rolling on full steam. K&D’s women once again rolled into town. Sitting pretty at the top of the table they shook off any pressure with a monumental display. Cruising through the course like a New Orleans Steamboat. Glam. Smooth. Powerful. A hilly Droitwich course was no match for our Women who once again proved to be the pick of the bunch racking up another match win to extend their lead at the top of the Midland Women’s XC League table.
There’s no secret. Just good people, a love of hard work and belief in their abilities.
Jane Evans (2nd), Rachel Gifford (3rd), Flick Sharp (5th) and Rosie Marsh (21st) contributed directly to a preposterous score of 31pts. Leaving second place Gloucester AC, on 73pts, more than doubling K&D’s score. While it’s 4 to score for the ‘A’ Team every place counts in Cross Country. With Gloucester scoring 12, 15, 18, 28 it put the pressure on but Rosie Marsh (21st) and Monica Green (23rd) responded to the pressure superbly.
Knocking massive points off the other teams were the closely packed pair of Mary Heald (32nd) and Jess Woolley (41st). K&D Stalwarts Claire Magee, Elaine Callinan and Jo Hitchcock fought a close battle in 83rd, 91st and 103rd while Jude Masfield (115th), Sarah Connors (130th), Amy Larsson (201st), Linda Whitehead (207th), Lissy Calvert (219th), Caroline Edwards (227th) Gail Partridge (240th) and Penny Taylor (241st) joined in the party atmosphere as they formed part of the match winning women’s team. And lets not foget a superb 3rd place for K&D women’s masters team. It was especially lovely to see a number of new faces making their K&D XC Debut. We hope they enjoyed the fun, facepaint, cake and victory!
We really can’t praise our K&D Women’s Team enough for the way they have seized this year’s opportunity. Remember you only have one race left to be part of a potential title-winning team. Not something you get to say very often. If you run, you contribute. That’s the rule in Cross.
The next race is 9th Feb, Gloucester. We really hope you’ll all consider the opportunity to turn out for our women and offer them your support by racing as part of a K&D Women’s XC Party. Gotta keep that big wheel turning…
Final call for anyone wanting to board the K&D Fun Bus to the National XC Champs on Sat 23rd Feb in Leeds.
We currently have 18 names down for entry – a K&D record. You MUST email me today though (10/01/2019). Entries are being sent in first thing tomorrow morning. Email email@example.com if you want to get a seat on the party bus. Everyone is welcome, whatever your level.
The National is the best race in the running calender (I prefer it even to the London Marathon!)
£10, included travel to and from Leeds on the day AND your race entry fee.
With the women storming their Division it was up to the men to follow in their footsteps. Despite it being a day that involved Danny Malone ending up in A&E, Chris Thorley throwing up, Sharpey recovering from Man Flu, Darren still being RIP in Pieces and Chris Morgan in the Arctic Circle on his Mega Yacht the men dug in to end the day in third place in the league. Not quite the highs of race one’s win, but enough to consolidate their promotion chase on a difficult day.
Good news that Danny’s ankle wasn’t broken came through later. The men wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully the swelling and ligaments are already on the mend!
The race itself saw Chris Sharp finish 7th over all again. Leading the K&D pack. Again every man took points off either the opposition’s A or B teams which shows the value of getting as many runners out as we can. Even when we are a little under the weather. There is plenty left to play for over the next 2 fixtures.
Men: The next fixture is nice and local. Leamington Spa on 12th Jan.
(Remember too that the Warwickshire XC Champs are on 5th Jan. A perfect warm up! let Torsten, Jo Tork, Darren John, Chris Sharp, Rosie Marsh, Emma Horsefield know if you want to run – or just comment under this on Facebook)
In the battle of numbers the K&D Women and Men tied at 18 runners each on Saturday.
Full Results: 7th – Chris Sharp 11th – Rob Yeates 24th – Gareth Wainwright 42nd – Torsten Roesler 63rd – Simon Bentley 68th – Gary Polhill 70th – Richard Dixon 74th – David Carbutt 82nd – Jack Bristow 94th – Greg Turner 96th – Michael Swann 115th – Nick Woolley 122nd – Paul Bentley 141st – Pete Makepeace 173rd – Max Gimson 174th – Darren John 178th – Ian Voaden 181st – Phil Wood
In another outstanding display of teamwork K&D’s women romped to the top of their division with a stunning win on Saturday at Welcombe Hills, Stratford.
Donned in Green face paint the women smashed their way round the incredibly hilly course. Not only did they win the race, they put 18 women through the field as the success at the front encouraged even more of our wonderful club’s women to join in the fun of a winning team. Jane Evans, K&D Women’s Show Pony for so long, delivered another superb result from the front to finish 2nd overall. She was backed up once again by a plethora of K&D as we again put 7(!!) women in the top-30.
Monica Green put in another stunning display of XC technique, Rachel, Flick, Rosie, and Jess backing up Jane with superb team work and packing! Special mention to Mary who came down that last ridiculous hill into the finish with a smile on her face that summed up how fun the day was.
Kerry Thompson continued her strong improvement moving up to 67th overall. With Louise Bell, Caroline Park, Jo Hitchcock, Jude Mansfield, Catherine Sherlock, Rachel Aston, Linda Whithead, Lianne Le Swann, Amanda Crees and Caroline Edwards all helping to add points to the other teams’ totals. What a squad!
Having so many women out created an brilliant atmosphere among the team with jubilant celebrations at what is probably K&D’s first ever league win at Cross Country. Contagious fun!
A big thank you to Emma Horsefield who acted as Official for the day managing the funnel. Our ladies certainly gave her plenty to manage as they stormed home!
Next league match is: 12th January 2019 – Droitwich High School – MWCCL Division Two
To join in the fun (you know you want to!) as K&D Women challenge for the league title speak to Women’s Team Captain Rosie Marsh, Vice-Captain Emma Horsefield or any of the K&D Committee and they’ll give you a high five and pass your name on.
